FAQ

Licensing questions, answered clearly.

The requirements contractors ask us about most — by state, by filing, and by deadline.

Which states does Prime Filing Group cover?

We handle contractor licensing and business compliance filings in Maryland, Washington D.C., Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. If you are expanding into a new jurisdiction, we map the requirements before you bid work there.

Do I need an MHIC license in Maryland?

If you perform home improvement, renovation or remodeling work in Maryland, you generally need an MHIC contractor license. Commercial work in a county may also require a business license from the Clerk of the Circuit Court, and new residential homes require Home Builder Registration.

Does Pennsylvania require a general contractor license?

There is no statewide general contractor license for most construction work. However, if you perform $5,000 or more of home improvement work per year you must register as a Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.

How long does a license application take?

Timelines depend on the agency and how complete your documents are. Most applications are prepared within a few business days once we have your information, and we track the filing with the agency until a decision is issued.

Can you handle renewals and deadlines for me?

Yes. We track renewal dates, annual reports and business personal property tax filings, and we contact you ahead of each deadline so nothing lapses.

What do I need to register a new construction business?

Typically a name, an entity structure, a resident agent and address, ownership details, and an EIN. We check name availability, guide the structure choice, file the formation documents and obtain the Federal Tax ID.

Do I have to register as a foreign entity in another state?

If your business was formed in one state and you plan to operate in another, that state usually requires a foreign entity registration before you perform work. Skipping it can lead to fines and loss of legal protections.

Is Prime Filing Group a law firm?

No. We are a professional compliance and filing service company. We prepare and file documents and manage agency correspondence, but we do not provide legal advice.
